Sonnet
The Hastened Prayer
I knelt to pray yet time was pressing near,
With bills to pay and work that must be done;
The day’s demands rang loud for me to hear,
I whispered words, then fled, my race begun.
A fleeting plea, then rose from bended knee,
Yet silence lingered, deep beyond my haste;
Assured my soul was safe, at least to me,
What peace is bought when prayer is run to waste?
All day I rushed, yet never spoke His name,
My lips stayed shut while hearts around grew cold;
For fear of scorn, I quenched the tender flame,
And chased a fleeting dream of earthly gold.
But death arrived, and stilled my busy hands,
And time was gone, like waves in shifting sands.
