Sonnet
Beloved Mentor
Through winding paths of youth you lit my way,
With patient hand and heart both firm and kind;
You shaped my steps, yet let my spirit sway,
And sowed in me the seeds of seeking mind.
Your fervor burned for truth and noble aim,
Yet never scorched the tender shoots I bore;
You taught that wisdom’s crown is not in fame,
But in the grace to learn, and thirst for more.
I left those halls without a word of praise,
Unmindful of the gift your care had sown;
Yet time, in mercy, grants these later days
To speak the thanks I should have long made known.
O teacher dear, your light still guides me through,
With ease and dignity because of you.
